Winter Spiced Steel Cut Oats
I am ALL about oatmeal, especially steel cut oats. I literally can eat them morning, noon and night…and these Winter Spiced Oats are perfect for a chilly morning by the fire.
all about the spices…
I love all the warm spices… think chai tea spices. For this oatmeal I wanted it to be flavorful enough where I didn’t have to add in a lot of sugar to make it yummy. So the spice fun began.
The spice blend I landed on (after several attempts) is cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, cardamon. You could also use pumpkin pie spice with additional cloves and cinnamon if you wanted. You could also leave out the cloves if you wanted a less in your face spice blend.
Instant Pot Love
Steel cut oats are my favorite but they can be a pain to make…. well unless you have an instant pot. With an instant pot you can steel cut oats, cooked perfectly, in under 30 minutes. I mean what can be better than steel cut oats hot and ready in the morning?
If you don’t have an instant pot (although I highly recommend you get one, this is the one I have) you can use a slow cooker and let it cook overnight.
No added sugar needed
As I mentioned above I wanted an oats recipe that I didn’t have a ton of added sugar (i.e. maple syrup or brown sugar) and these oats are perfection. Now, be warned they are not sweet, they are a more warm, spicy oatmeal. If you wanted to sweeten them up you could add in some maple syrup and it would be delicious.
I also love the texture. They are really hearty, making them a perfect cold morning breakfast that will stick with you until lunch. I love feeling satisfied after breakfast.
