Brown Sugar + Buttermilk = YUMMY Pie

Thanksgiving is in 4 days.  YES, only 4 more days until it is TURKEY time.  Now I know you probably already have your menu set, but you might want to rethink the dessert table for this super simple, but AMAZING Brown Sugar Buttermilk Chess Pie.

Pie like no other

Do you have a favorite pie from childhood?  You know that one pie that someone special made, or one that you always got a particular restaurant if you were “good”.  For my mom that pie is Buttermilk Chess Pie from Furr’s Cafeteria.

My mom grew up in Brownfield, Texas.  It is a small town in West Texas not too far from Lubbock.  Anytime they would go to Lubbock to Furr’s my mom would always have a piece of chess pie.  As I grew up, and we would visit the Lubbock area I learned to LOVE chess pie at Furr’s as well.  I have never found as good of one at any other restaurant….it truly is a one of a kind.

Simple can be best

If you ask my family I am the one who can takes a simple recipe and adds in a bunch of crazy stuff just for the fun of it.  I admit I do like the change recipes up often but even I know sometimes simple is best.

A traditional chess pie is very a simple recipe, which makes it so perfect for the Holidays.  It is essentially 5 or 6 ingredients and voila you are done.  To take this simple pie to the next level, while still keeping it easy and much like my favorite childhood pie, I switched most of the white sugar to brown sugar.  Really it is that simple.

Homemade made easy

The beauty of this pie is that you probably have everything you need already.  The filling is all made in one bowl, is ready to bake in 10 minutes or less and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.  Can it get any easier?

Trist me this is a must make for the Holiday season!!

I’m not sure I will be waiting to make this pie, I just love it so much.  I might go ahead and make one today and then another for Turkey Day.  I can almost taste it now.

I've made this several times now and we just love it! It's very different from the usual pie, the texture, flavor, etc. My first bite, I wasn't so sure, but it really grew on me quick! Now it's become a recipe we carve, and I'll make a few times a year. Thanks for sharing!
